Dolphin Boys – Story Series Part 4

It was Deva’s day literally as he once again won the Tamilnadu state swimming championship and he wanted to celebrate it.  Mithun suggested a drive along the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram and nobody had any other suggestion. So all the four friends went to Mithun’s house in Mylapore. They were welcomed by mithun’s mother and his sister. After having some snacks, they packed up things and mithun started his Ford Endeavour.

All the boys made themselves comfortable inside the car except Raja. He felt that he is not fit for the travel as he has not contributed anything. Its mithun’s car, deva’s treat day, and akilan is the main photographer and gives the money for anyother expences. Since raja is not earning its always this inferiority in him that creaps up and stops him from enjoying. Akilan was quick to convince Deva and get him out of this feeling. As always, friends came together and started the journey happily.

After all the traffic inside the city the car crossed the tolgate of ECR and there came the real enjoyment of driving along East Coast Beach. As music started to rock the car, the speed picked up and mithun was driving it at great speed. Deva wondered how all the rich guys have such a control on their car, how muchever speed they go. May be because they are used to it from childhood. With some small stops along the ECR for snacks and cool drinks the journey was comfortable and the boys reached Mahabalipuram soon. It was a nice cool day, but the sun thretened to become hot. The boys went around Mahabalipuram and had some photo sessions. As the evening approached the boys had some sea food along the beach.

Suddenly there was a big cry from one of the ladies on the beach. A second of panic got into everyone, as deva was quick to react. Mithun enquired the lady and came to know that her 12 year old girl has been washed away by the waves. As raja was persuading the mother deva jumped into the sea to search for the girl. Mithun and Akilan rushed to find some boatmen.

It was becoming dark into the late evening and everybody has started to loose hope while Mithun and Akilan were already on search with some boatmen accompanying them.

There is still no trace of the girl and fear doubled when deva too disappeared from their sight. Raja became more tense, but controlled it so as to control the lady. The day became more dark and the question about Deva and the girl was slowly becoming unaswerable……

The Wonderful early Sun started to heat up the solar panels on the terrace. As deva started to freshen up, Akilan returned from his paper delivery job and went to bath. Raja came with four glasses of tea and distributed to all. After a quick bath akilan too joined them.

Deva slowly started to talk about akilan’s dream last night. Even though mithun and raja were not interested, they wanted to listen to Akilan as that may free up his mind. Akilan started to narrate his dream.

” It was a dark night and i was sleeping in a small makeshift bed. Suddenly i woke up hearing big blasts around me. I could not understand what that blast may be. Somebody from outside shouted ‘Army Army’. My mother took me off from bed restlessly and started running outside the tent. Suddenly a bullet came from nowhere and hit my mothers shoulder. She screamed from pain as she dropped me on the groud. A young man then came to her resque. He got her a stetcher and four others carried my mother somewhere. I started crying very hard, while that young man noticed me. He took me in his hands and started running towards the forests. I saw my mother laid in a vehicle which went in the opposite direction. I started weeping very hard as the distance between us kept on increasing. And thats it i got up from the dream then”

The mood of the four boys became a bit sad. Deva was quick to recover and asked him ‘where is aklian’s mother now?’.

Akilan just replied that ‘it is not just a dream, Its my real life experience’. Deva could not belive what akilan told.  More and more questions began creeping up in his mind. He knew he can’t ask them openly to akilan, but desperately wanted to know the answer for all his questions……

Akilan’s Answers may not give happiness, but it will give you the power to face challenges in your life…… read on.

Dolphin Boys – Story Series Part 2

The morning sun lighted the room through the half broken wooden window. Mithun was the first to wake up followed by Raja. Deva was still in bed. Raja started to fold up the bed sheets while Mithun started a tougher job – waking up Deva. Deva sleeps like  Narakasura that its too hard to introduce this world to him every morning. After a mini war with him, Mithun finally managed to wake up Deva. Deva’s sleep vanished when he found that Akilan is not in the room.

Deva became curious about where could have akilan gone in the early morning. Mithun noticed his curiosity and told him that Akilan has gone to deliver papers in the morning to households and will return in a few minutes. Deva became a bit cool,  seeing the comfortable body language of Mithun and Raja.

This is the first time that Deva is sleeping in Raja’s room. Raja is from a middle class family from chennai. His father is working in Banglore and occasionally comes to visit him. Raja has no specific work in Chennai, but doesn’t wish to live in a city without a Beach. He is such a fan of beaches. He often walks alone on the sands of The Marina Beach, in Chennai and so he met Akilan during such a walk.

Akilan is a sea enthusiast. He is a part-time researcher on sea species. He is from Northern Srilanka. His life is full of incidents that you dont want to see, but definitely want to hear from him as that can reduce the pain on his heart. Akilan often boards big ships that leave from the Chennai port and return in a small boat that he always manages to find from the fisherman community with whom he is very friendly. He has many friends in the port who help him to board ships to go to his research point somewhere in the mid sea. One of such friends in the port is Mithun.

Mithun – a very rich boy. His family is from Rajasthan. They started the port handling business some 20 years ago in mumbai and came to chennai 10 years ago for ease of transport to their customers. Mithun stopped his studies after school. He is now managing a part of his family business. He is a great swimmer and has swimmed in dangerous parts of the Marina Beach. In his free time he volunteers to save drowning swimmers in the Marina. So thats were he met Deva.

Deva is a full-time swimmer. He takes swimming classes for kids in the swimming pool in the Anna University Campus. The classes will be over by 8 in the morning. He then starts practicing swimming for up-to 3 hrs. He is physically very strong and aims to participate in the Olympics representing India. In the evening he volunteers for saving drowning swimmers in the Marina. And ends the day with policemen helping them in catching speeding vehicles along the mount road in chennai.

Its unusual for a rich boy like Mithun to stay in such a small, badly ventilated, terrace room. But thats what friendship does to one’s behaviour and habits. He will come to sleep in this room atleast once in a week. He along with Raja are an important part of Akilan’s life as they have helped him a lot to forget his bad memories of his homeland Srilanka and put him on a career path. Akilan has chosen marine research as his field. His favourite sea species – DOLPHINS…….

And in future episodes we will go through the life of the Boys towards this wonderful species…..

Akilan – suddenly woke up from his bed with a scream. The scream woke all his friends in the room.

Everybody surrounded him and enquired whether he is all right. Akilan’s roommate Raja immediately got  a water bottle. Mithun washed akilan’s face with water and gave some water for him to drink.

Deva enquired akilan about what was his dream as Raja stopped him and signalled everybody to go to bed. Its not usual for deva to see somebody scream so big just for a dream. He was very disturbed and desperately wanted to know the reason -’why akilan woke up in midnight like that?’. He could see akilan’s eyes were still filled with so much fear. He wanted to help akilan and tried to get up again. There came one hand which dragged him back to bed. That was Mithun. He signalled me warningly, to sleep. ‘Don’t Disturb Him’ is what mithun said to deva. Deva found that both raja and mithun seemed to be used to this behaviour of akilan and decided to obey them just for night and enquire about the matter the next morning. So did everybody went to sleep except akilan who still didnt come out of  the fear. He was lying still with bulged eyes full of fear. ‘what is happening to akilan?’ the quetion filled deva’s mind while he along with everybody else  slept of completely in an hour. The next day is not going to be the same for deva as he will come to know what’s troubling Akilan……
